In the mid 1800’s, the truth concerning Christ, His person, His work, His return, His church, the gathering center, it’s ground and principles was restored. At that time there was much that needed to be presented to souls. It is possible that there might not have been many long silences during edification or reading meetings as the Spirit of God had much to communicate and reveal to the saints. But today, although there are still those who need to be brought to the knowledge of the truth, most of the brethren “know” the truth. So even though there are numerous ones today well taught who can speak of many things, silences are in order and are the expression of dependence and waiting on the leading of Spirit direction and edification. The absence of such silence, particularly in large meetings where many are present, would be an indication of the activity of man which often betrays itself by two or sometimes three brothers starting to talk at the same time while only one can be lead of the Spirit to speak thus at any given time. Witnesses to such things would then be responsible to exhort the saints to wait on the Lord, for such activity of man is a practical denial of the truth professed and can often deprive the saints of the ministry of the Spirit.
