God has given two great gifts which express Who He is and His great love. The first gift is the one the Father has given us, the Son Himself (John 3:16, 2 Cor. 9:15), surely a perfect gift, unfathomable in perfection, depth and value.
The second is the one the Father has given the Son – US! Seven times, the perfect number, in John 17, the Lord makes reference to those thus given Him by the Father (verses 2,6,6,7,9,12,24), another perfect gift but one whose perfection is derived from the first gift, from the work of the Son Himself (Eph. 5:27, Heb. 10:14). These children God has given Him (Heb. 2:13) are part of that treasure found in the field for which he sold all that He had (Mat. 13:44)!
